DYSENTERY

Etiology
  • Dysentery is an inflammatory disease of the intestine, especially of the colon, which always results in severe diarrhea and abdominal pains. Other symptoms may include fever and a feeling of incomplete defecation. The disease is caused by External Invasion, Improper diet or food consumption which include several types of infectious pathogens such as bacteria, viruses and parasites.
  • Bacillary dysentery is an intestinal infection and is a severe form of shigellosis. Bacillary dysentery is associated with a species of bacteria from the Enterobacteriaceae family. The term is usually restricted to Shigella infections. Shigellosis is caused by one of several types of Shigella bacteria.
  • Acute bacillary dysentery:
    A history of eating contaminated food or
    A close incouter with a dysentery patient
    Abrupt onset
    Chills and fever
    Whole body pain
    Abdominal cramoing and diarrhea, mainly around the umbilicus or the left lower quadrant
    Maybe ten or more bowel movements per day
    Initially, the stools are soft and yellow
    Subsequently, they are filled with purulent mucus and Blood
    Tenesmus
    The may be loss of consciousness in the elderly
  • Chronic bacillary dysentery:
    A past history of acute bacillary dysentery
    Recurrent or persistent abdominal pain
    Diarrhea or
    Alternating diarrhea and constipation
    Intermittent appearance of purulent mucus and Blood in the stools
    Long-term patients may appear weak, emaciate and malnourished
