POINT: REN-9 (CONCEPTION VESSEL-9)  

NAME: SHUIFEN

LOCATION:

  • 1 cun superior to the umbilicus on the midline.
  • 1 cun directly above the navel.
  • On the midline of the abdomen, 2 cun above the umbilicus and 7 cun below the sternocostal angle.

NEEDLING:

  • Straight insertion 1 to 1.5 cun.
  • Perpendicular insertion 0.5 to 1 cun.
  • Moxibustion is applicable.
  • Perpendicular insertion 0.8 to 1.5 cun.
  • Caution: in thin patients deep needling may penetrate the peritonea cavity.

COMMAND FUNCTIONS:

  • Reunion point of the REN and Lung channels

CONTRAINDICATIONS:

  • Contraindicated to needle for those with ascites.
  • Contraindicated for moxibustion during pregnancy.
  • some say this point should not be needled just warmed with moxa.

NOTES:

  • This is a very important point to use whenever there is Dampness, Phlegm or edema.
  • Use this point when you can't harmonize the Bladder and Kidneys.
  • It is good for all Internal secretions.
  • It is good for the fluidity of the mind and of the limbs.
  • It balances the endocrine and lymphatic systems.
  • this is the main water control point in the body.
  • It is located just above where the Small Intestine separates the pure from the turbid.
