with Zhi Zi, powerfully clears and drains lurking Heat from the Lungs with fever, fullness in the chest, cough with yellow sputum and epistaxis or hematemesis, treats Damp-Heat and jaundice, sores due to Heat toxin and irregular vaginal bleeding due to Liver Fire.
With Shi Gao, Zhi Mu and Mu Dan Pi, for Excess Heat with persistent high fever and irritability.
Fr. Gardeniae Zhi Zi 3-18g Clears Heat, reduces Fire, eliminates irritability, cools the Blood and relieves toxicity.
With Lian Qiao, for Heat entering the Pericardium, and Heat remaining in the Heart channel with sores in the mouth or on the tongue, dark, scanty urine or urinary discomfort
With Huang Lian, Huang Qin and Lian Qiao, for boils and carbuncles.
With Mu Dan Pi, resolves Qi Level constraint leading to Heat and Heat in the Blood, treats irregular menstruation, headache, red eyes, and thirst due to Liver Qi Heat from constraint and dysmenorrhea, headache, dry, scratchy eyes and intercostal pain due to Liver Blood Deficiency.
Fr. Forsythiae Lian Qiao 3-18g Clears Heat, relieves toxicity, clears Blood Heat and directs the formula to the upper body.
With Shi Gao, Sheng Di Huang and Xuan Shen, for Heart Fire.
Rx. Platycodi Jie Geng 1.5-12g Expels pus, benefits the throat and directs the effects of other herbs to the upper body.
With Gan Cao, disseminates Lung Qi, expels Phlegm, resolves toxicity, and expels pus for productive cough with hoarseness, pain and swelling of the throat due to Wind-Heat, Lung abscess with expectoration of pus and pain in the chest and flanks and Excess disorders in the Upper Jiao with no disorder in the Lower Jiao.
With Huang Qin and Gan Cao, for hoarseness, pain and swelling of the throat due to Wind-Heat (stronger action).
