POINT: ST-5 (STOMACH-5)

  • 0.5 cun anterior to ST-6 Jiache, in a trough on the border of the mandible formed when the mouth is closed tightly.
  • Anterior to the angle of the mandible, on the anterior border of the attached portion of the masseter muscle where the pulsation of the facial artery is palpable, in the groove-like depression appearing when the cheek is bulged.
  • Directly anterior to the angle of the jaw, in a depression at the anterior border of the masseter muscle.
    Mote: ask the patient to clench the jaw before locating.
  • Slanted insertion, 0.5 to 0.8 cun.
  • Puncture obliquely 0.3 to 0.5 cun.
  • Caution: avoid puncturing the artery.
  • Moxibustion is applicable.
  • Transverse insertion to join with ST-4 Dicang or ST-6 Jiache
  • Eliminates Wind
