- It is used for Deficiency of Blood and Kidney Jing and is used in treatment of many degenerative diseases - e.g. cardiac insufficiency, diabetes and arthritis.
- The uses are increasing as degenerative diseases are increasing.
- Some sources say that this herb brightens eyes.
- This herb tonifies the Blood and Yin without being cloying or upsetting the digestion.
- This herb is said to expel Heat, nourish the Yin and blacken the hair and beard.
- Both Sang Shen and Sm. Sesame Nigri Hei Zhi Ma serve as food as well as medicinals, both tonify the Liver and Kidneys, enrich Yin, augment the Blood, moisten Dryness and lubricate the Intestines. Hei Zhi Ma is neutral, enters the Kidneys to replenish the essence and augment the marrow. Sang Shen is cool, enters the Blood Level and secondarily tonifies the Kidneys.
- Sang Shen, Fr. Lycii Gou Qi Zi and Fr. Ligustri Lucidi Niu Zhen Zi all tonify the Liver and Kidney Yin. Gou Qi Zi also assists Kidney Yang and Sang Shen tonifies the Blood. Nu Zhen Zi tonifies the Yin and cools Heat from Yin Deficiency.
- Sang Shen and Rx. Rehmanniae Preparata Shu Di Huang are both excellent Yin and Blood tonics. Sang Shen is Cold and tonifies the Kidneys and Liver. It is gentle and subtle and works well as a long term tonic. Shu Di Huang is Warm and strongly nourishes Yin and tonifies Blood. It is potent and exerts immediate effects.
