- Both Shu Di Huang and Rx. Polygoni Multiflori He Shou Wu nourish Blood, enrich Yin and tonify the Kidneys and Liver. He Shou Wu primarily enters the Liver to adjust and tonify the Blood while secondarily enriching Kidney Yin and astringing Jing. Shu Di Huang enters the Kidneys to augment Jing and marrow and strongly tonify true Yin, while secondarily nourishing Blood and tonifying the Liver. Sheng Di Huang cools the Blood while Sheng He Shou Wu treats malarial disorders resolves toxicity and moistens the Intestines.
- Both Shu Di Huang and Colla Corii Asini E Jiao enter the Liver and Kidney channels, nourish Blood, enrich Kidney Yin and treat Blood Deficiency and gynecological disorders such as irregular menstruation or pregnancy or postpartum disorders. Shu Di Huang generates Jing and augments marrow, while E Jiao enriches Lung Yin and stops bleeding. Both substances are greasy and can interfere with digestion.
- Dry-fried Cooked Rehmannia Chao Shu Di Huang has it greasiness reduced and is used for those with weak digestion.
- Charred Cooked Rehmanniae Shu Di Huang Tan nourishes Blood with an enhanced ability to stop bleeding.
- Ginger-prepared Cooked Rehmannia Jiang Zhi Shu Di Huang no longer has a cloying effect on the diaphragm and is most appropriate for those with Phlegm-Dampness in the area of the diaphragm.
- Cooked Rehmannia with Amomum Fruit Sha Ren Ban Shu Di is less greasy and doesn't interfere with digestion.
