POINT: SP-16 (SPLEEN-16)

Also Known As:
  • On the abdomen, in the depression at the lateral border of the rectus abdominus muscle, 3 cun superior to SP-15 Daheng.
    Note: In some patients with a narrow subcostal angle, the point may fall on the costal margin; it should then either be located more medially or needle transversely on the costal margin.
  • On the abdomen, in the depression at the lateral border of the rectus abdominus muscle, 4 cun lateral to the midline at the lateral border of the rectus abdominus muscle.
  • Located 3 cun above SP-15 Daheng 3.5 cun lateral to the median line of the abdomen.
  • 3 cun above the center of the umbilicus and 4 cun lateral to the anterior midline.
  • Perpendicular insertion 0.5 to 1 cun.
    Caution:
    1. In thin patients, deep needling may penetrate the peritoneal cavity.
    2. Deep needling may penetrate an enlarged Spleen.
  • Straight insertion 1-1.5 cun.
  • Puncture perpendicularly 0.7 to 1.2 cun.
  • Moxibustion is applicable.
